Name That Shifter, No. 180: 1998 Volkswagen Passat GLS Wagon

Name That Shifter

1998 VW Passat GLS Wagon

Shifter No 180On Tuesday, we presented this week's shifter and asked you to identify the make and model of the vehicle whence it came. Once again, repeat winner Ram Narayan swooped in moments after we posted to reveal that the shifter belongs to the so-called B5-generation Volkswagen Passat.

The 1998 GLS wagon featured here is from our November 1998 issue. Saddled with a 3180-pound curb weight, the Passat sauntered to 60 mph in a so-so 8.5 seconds. Still, with a turbocharged four and an Audi A4–derived chassis, the GLS was described by our editors as fun-to-drive, if not a total thrill ride. And besides, it's a Euro wagon—what's not to like?
