Apple Announces ‘iOS in the Car’ Phone-to-Infotainment-Screen Integration at 2013 WWDC

Today, Apple made a big announcement at its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC): a new, automotive-specific feature of the new iOS 7 mobile operating system. The feature, which Apple is calling iOS in the Car, links the iPhone to a car's infotainment screen. But this is no mere Bluetooth connection—the setup literally adapts the iPhone's operating system to the car's in-dash screen and lets users manipulate functions that include messaging, navigation, and more. Of course, iOS in the Car is a natural extension of Apple's latest efforts to integrate its Siri personal assistant into cars. But that integration consisted solely of a retrofitted steering-wheel button that, when pushed, activated Siri via Bluetooth. Sending a plethora of Apple-designed iPhone 5 functions to a car's infotainment display is an entirely different matter. Users will be able to use touch or voice inputs—the latter of which will be handled by Siri—to operate their phone, although it isn't yet clear whether the screen-to-screen connection will be made via a wired USB or wireless Bluetooth connection. Details are still in—ahem—development, but based on Apple's WWDC keynote presentation slide for Siri in the Car, it appears at least Acura, Chevrolet, Ferrari, Honda, Hyundai, Infiniti, Jaguar, Kia, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Opel, and Volvo are on board with Apple and will roll out compatible infotainment systems starting next year.
