C/D: Has it helped your career that you were a math genius at Oxford?

AG: Well, it helped my RAF career, understanding the technical aspects of flying ­airplanes. And it helped with the weapons ­planning I undertook for the Libyan bombing campaign we waged last year from Italy.

C/D: What's your favorite aircraft?

AG: The F-4 Phantom. It's basically 1960s technology—quirky. So it's challenging. If you fly it well, it's satisfying. (more…)
