Pre-collision systems that prepare or apply the brakes when they detect an impending crash have become widespread among luxury cars, and one of the systems is under scrutiny. Left Lane News reports the Infiniti JX35's system, called Intelligent Brake Assist with Forward Collision Warning, is being investigated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration because of two complaints of JX35s inadvertently stopping. See a demo of the system here. NHTSA is investigating the matter on some 8,000 2013 JX35s; the agency has not yet announced a recall.
In other news: - Chrysler's quarterly profits hit $436 million on strong sales, a reversal of the $551 million loss in the year-ago quarter. Through the first half of 2012, the Fiat-controlled automaker's U.S. sales, including the Fiat 500, are up 30%.
- Honda reported a quarterly profit of $2.25 billion at current exchange rates, Reuters reports. That's eight times more than a year ago, when the automaker grappled with inventory losses from an earthquake and tsunami in Japan.
- We reported last year that Buick would make IntelliLink standard once the brand finished launching the dashboard multimedia system. That's about to happen: IntelliLink will come on every 2013 Buick, the Detroit News reports.
- Recent departures at GM — including the automaker's European chief, marketing head and a top designer — have raised concerns, the Detroit News reports. A GM spokesman told the newspaper the departures' timing is "purely coincidental," but one analyst noted the personnel changes demonstrate the "new GM" still needs work.
