2013 Mercedes-Benz G-class Update Found Hiding in 2013 GLK Photos

2013 G-Class

A photo of the latest upgrade to the 33-year-old Mercedes-Benz G-class was leaked in official photos released by the company. The revised G can be seen lurking in the background of a shot of the 2013 GLK.

As shown here, the 2013 G will add a bar of LED running lights—they're now required equipment on modern luxury automobiles—positioned underneath the headlights. The side mirrors will change to more closely resemble those on the rest of Mercedes' lineup, with a pair of turn-indicator stripes on each mirror. We're expecting the interior to get the latest version of Mercedes' COMAND infotainment interface, as well as a very luxurious remodel.

The new G should trade in its 382-hp, 391-lb-ft, 5.5-liter V-8 for the Mercedes lineup's latest "550" engine: a 4.7-liter twin-turbo V-8 that makes 429 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque.

The supercharged G55 AMG, which was put out to pasture after 2011, will have a replacement in the G63 AMG. That model should feature the M157 5.5-liter twin-turbo V-8 that's proliferating throughout the AMG range. Expect the M157 to make somewhere in the area of 540 hp and just shy of 600 lb-ft of torque in the G.

Rumors of a G65 with a V-12 (and its own pair of turbos) won't quit, but we're not so sure it would end up in the U.S. even if it does become a reality. We sure wouldn't mind, though.
