We Visit the World’s Greatest Sports Coupes Exhibit at the Petersen Museum!

We Visit the World's Greatest Sports Coupes Exhibit at the Petersen Museum!

Ask a dozen car enthusiasts what they believe to be the world's greatest sports coupe and you'll probably get a dozen different answers. But twelve different answers is exactly what the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles wanted to hear when it asked car-guy celebrities from the worlds of music, movies, and more to help curate its "The World's Greatest Sports Coupes" exhibit.

Chosen by the likes of Francis Ford Coppola, Adam Carolla, and Pixar's John Lasseter, among others, some of the 12 cars included might be slightly surprising, while others are no-brainers. We've included a few of our favorites here, and you can see the rest in the gallery. Of course, if you want to see them in person, the cars will be on display at the Petersen until October 18.

1961 Aston Martin DB4 Zagato

1961 Aston Martin DB4 Zagato

It's hard to get noticed next to a Ferrari 250GTO, but this olive green '61 DB4 Zagato—one of four ever made for street use and the very car featured at the 1961 Turin auto show, is arresting. With Zagato's trademark double-bubble roof and 100 pounds of weight removed by replacing steel parts with aluminum, the hand-crafted DB4 Zagato is a very special, extremely rare, and a real treat to see in person.

1963 Ferrari Berlinetta Lusso

1963 Ferrari Berlinetta Lusso

This Ferrari Lusso was decidedly luxurious by Ferrari standards of the time, and this gorgeous, deep-red metallic example, with its gleaming Borrani wheels and rich cognac interior, is certainly stimulating to eyeball. "I just love looking at it," said Carolla. He's not alone, but we imagine it's even better to drive.

1967 Jaguar E-Type

1967 Jaguar E-type

Jaguar is the sponsor this show, which is why observers will find a new F-Type coupe tucked in the corner of the exhibit. But even so, it's not like the E-type wouldn't have been included in the exhibit proper—the timeless coupe made it on more than one celebrity judge's short list, according to the Petersen. This black beauty is one of the most beautiful examples you will ever see.

1963 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray

1963 Chevrolet Corvette Sting Ray

We sure can't argue with this choice, and the little red '63 split-window coupe is as iconic as any Corvette could ever hope to be. The C7 Corvette is worthy of a "world's greatest current sports coupes" trophy, but if there's any Vette that belongs in a museum, the rare and savory split-window is it.

1974 Iso Grifo

1974 Iso Grifo, chosen by Brian Johnson of AC/DC

An esoteric choice to say the least, the brutal, Bertone-designed Iso Grifo appears blunt and crude next to the scrumptious Ferrari GTO and the impossibly elegant Mercedes-Benz gullwing, but Brian Johnson finds the Iso Grifo's brazenness particularly appealing. And alas, its god-awful stand-up hood notwithstanding, so do we.
