Amid calls from two legislators demanding that GM tell owners of affected ignition recall cars to stop driving them, the automaker is answering back today with a video demonstrating the safety of driving with a single key in the ignition. According to GM and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the cars' defective ignition switch, combined with the weight of a heavy key ring while driving over jarring terrain, can lead to a loss of power steering, antilock brakes and airbags.
Jeff Boyer, GM's newly minted vice president of global vehicle safety, says GM has conducted more than 80 tests over a variety of different terrains and driving conditions to demonstrate that driving with a signal key on the ring is safe. Check out the video above.
