Awesome Honda S660 Kei Sports Car Will Reach Production!

Honda S660 concept

While we all eagerly await any news regarding the next-generation Mazda Miata, a different sports-car-related tidbit sure to give enthusiasts butterflies has just come to light. It seems Honda is putting its incredibly cool S660 sports car into production, according to Japanese site Response.jp, and the little ride will be produced in the same plant that spat out its inspiration, the original Pininfarina-designed Beat.

If you don't know what a Beat is, well, that's understandable. Honda never exported it to the U.S.—although some folks in Canada managed to get their hands on a handful—mostly because the car was too damn small. Designed to comply with Japanese "kei" car regulations, which mandate a tiny footprint and sub-660-cc engine size, the Beat nonetheless packed rear-drive and a mid-engine layout. And so does the S660 concept car, although it's not clear what will power the production car. A turbocharged 660-cc engine—likely a three-cylinder—would make the most sense, but we'll just need to wait and see what Honda comes up with when the S660 (if that's what it ultimately is called) goes on sale in Japan in 2015. Sorry, fans of oddball Asian rides, there's nothing as of yet that indicates the S660 could come here.
