The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has named the redesigned-for-2015 Hyundai Genesis a Top Safety Pick Plus, the institute's highest honor. The premium full-size sedan earned a good rating in crashworthiness tests including small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraints, in addition to a superior rating for front crash protection. To earn the designation, a vehicle must receive ratings of good or acceptable in small overlap tests; good in the other four tests; and basic, advanced or superior in front crash protection.
The institute added the small overlap test in 2012. It replicates what happens when the front corner of a vehicle strikes another vehicle or an object such as a tree or utility pole. "In the small overlap test, the driver's space was maintained well, and injury measures recorded on the driver dummy indicated low risk of any significant injuries in a crash of this severity," the institute stated.
The institute also stated that the Genesis' optional front crash prevention system, which is new for the 2015 model year, earns a superior rating because of its automatic braking capabilities. In track tests, the car stopped completely before hitting the target in tests at 12 mph and 25 mph. The Genesis is one of three vehicles in the institute's "large luxury car" class to earn Top Safety Pick Plus for 2014.
