At this year's Concours d'Élégance in Pebble Beach, McLaren revealed two concepts: one it decided to call the X1, and another it named MP4-12C Can-Am edition. Some time after when regained our composure upon seeing the X1, we demanded that the Woking, England–based factory produce a few examples of the Can-Am. And McLaren's done just that: 30 12C Can-Ams will be built with a sticker price of £375,000 (roughly $600,000 at today's exchange rates). That's more than double the cost of an already-expensive standard MP4-12C. The 12C Can Am Edition isn't street legal and is intended only to be a track-day toy—or a museum piece. Of course, McLaren already has a track version of the MP4-12C in its portfolio, the 12C GT3. But the Can-Am edition doesn't conform to GT3 regulations, and this allows McLaren to create its ultimate track car. The new variant, therefore, features an unrestricted engine, which produces 630 hp from its twin-turbocharged 3.8-liter V-8. That's mere 14 hp more than the roadgoing 2013 MP4-12C, but it's well over 100 hp more than the GT3, with regulations inhibiting what the racer can do. And thus, the Can-Am is "the most powerful 12C produced to date."
The decision to produce a limited run of 12C Can-Ams came shortly after the concept's reveal earlier this year. The racy 12C concept went over so well with the affluent crowd that the company decided to simply go ahead and do it. Initially, the Can-Am was intended to serve as nothing more than a design study.
