2014 Mazda 6 to Get Skyactiv Diesel [2012 L.A. Auto Show]

After quite some time of teasing and speculation, Mazda has finally spilled the beans: The 2.2-liter Skyactiv-D diesel engine will make it's U.S. debut in the 2014 Mazda 6. Slated to hit showrooms in January of 2013, Mazda says the first 6s off the line will be powered by the Skyactiv-G 2.5-liter gasoline engine, followed by diesel-powered models in the second half of the year. We recently sampled a Euro-spec 6 with both powertrains and came away impressed by the compression-ignition mill.

As we detailed in our analysis of Mazda's Skyactiv engine range, the new 2.2-liter diesel utilizes a two-stage turbocharger, redlines at a lofty—by diesel standards—5200 rpm, and requires no additional NOx aftertreatments to meet our emission standards. Mazda says the Skyactiv-D in 6 trim benefits from 20-percent less internal friction, is 10-percent lighter, and is more efficient than the current MZR 2.2-liter diesel engine sold in other global markets. Tech notes aside, we're thrilled another oil-burner has arrived Stateside to stand toe-to-toe with Volkswagen—and after the barrage of TDIs added to its lineup, Audi—in the diesel-powered passenger-car segment.

Although pricing, economy, and performance figures are not yet available for the 6, Mazda says both engines with be available with either a six-speed automatic or a six-speed manual transmission. Final specifications including standard and optional features, economy numbers, and pricing for all 2014 Mazda 6 models will be available closer to the car's on-sale date.
