Volkswagen Will Produce a SportWagen-Based Crossover, Possibly Not For the U.S. [2012 L.A. Auto Show]

For the first time, Volkswagen will bring a crossover version of the next-generation Jetta SportWagen—known as Golf estate or Golf variant in most regions—to market. The crossover wagon will be launched in Germany in early 2014, following the late 2013 launch of the Golf variant.

A high-level European Volkswagen employee confirmed the addition to the lineup, adding that the Golf Alltrack would be similar in style to the European-market Passat Alltrack, which features more ground clearance, enhanced traction aids, rugged body cladding, and modifications to the interior. Think of it as Volkswagen's equivalent of the Subaru Outback line.



It's still unclear whether the Golf Alltrack will be launched in the U.S. at this point. As far as a name, that's still not been decided as the next-gen Jetta SportWagen's name hasn't been determined yet. Purists want to abandon the established but misleading Jetta SportWagen moniker, as the new wagon will be based on the Golf's modern MQB, not the Jetta's older PQ35, platform. It's possible VW simply will call it SportWagen; however, we hear that trademark issues could prevent this solution.
