Hyundai’s Veloster Turbo Concepts: One for Show, One for Go [2012 SEMA Show]

Hyundai brought two Veloster Turbos to Las Vegas for the SEMA show and they both stand out in two very different ways. The ARK Performance Alpine concept showcases what's possible for the turbocharged hatch, while reminding people that snowboarding is a hip sport that young people enjoy. The JP Edition Veloster, however, gives us an idea of what the Veloster would look like if it was made of spearmint gum. ARK Performance Veloster Turbo Alpine Concept In an effort to bring awareness to its ever-expanding lineup of products, Korean-based ARK Performance created the snowboard-themed Veloster Alpine Edition in hopes of appealing to winter sports enthusiasts who "love to carve the snow as much as a twisty canyon road." ARK turned to BTRcc, who tweaked and tuned the 1.6-liter turbo motor to a whopping 232 hp and 240 lb-ft of torque, increases of 31 hp and 45 lb-ft over stock. The parts list used to get these numbers is rather long and extensive. ARK's Alpine receives a new exhaust system, a nitrous kit, a new radiator, and a new intake. And the list of chassis upgrades is similarly longwinded. A coil-over suspension is added, as is a big-brake kit, and new steering knuckles. The custom interior is swathed in faux suede, Italian leather, and breathable fabrics. All three materials were chosen specifically for their durability in wet environments, and are finished by the winter-themed same bright whites and cool blues exhibited on the exterior. While our interest is piqued by the promise of additional performance provided by all the mods, we generally don't advertise our affinity for winter sports. SEMA is no place for wallflowers, but the idea of a Veloster packing this kind of performance underneath a Plain Jane exterior devoid of wings and badging would really get our attention. JP Edition Veloster Turbo Concept Marketing, photography, and brand-development guru John Pangilinan—known simply as John P. in the tuner community—managed to find time in his busy schedule to whip up a Veloster Turbo concept for Hyundai's 2012 SEMA display. No stranger to concept vehicles, the California-based tastemaker enlisted the help of BASF to come up with a distinctive color Pangilinan calls "an iris-warping brilliant mint green." The big news is the audio system, which is an Alpine unit with two 12-inch woofers, each powered by it's own 550-watt amplifier.
