2014 Mitsubishi Outlander and 2013 Outlander Sport Limited Edition to Take the Stage in L.A. [2012 L.A. Auto Show]

Mitsubishi's decision to debut the new Outlander lineup in the City of Angels probably has as much or more to do with faith as it does marketing savvy, especially when you consider that fellow also-rans in the U.S. automotive marketplace Suzuki recently announced it's not going to sell cars in this country anymore. Mitsubishi's U.S. operations have been plagued by years of financial woes and erratic product decisions, yet the brand's never stopped trying. The latest example of such fight is the 2014 Outlander. We've already seen the 2013 European-Spec Outlander and what we're getting is largely the same piece, albeit massaged for the North American market. Although no fuel-economy numbers have been released, Mistsu is claiming the new Outlander will be among the most fuel-efficient crossovers that feature standard seven-passenger seating. The engine—equipped with a new version of the brand's MIVEC continuously variable valve timing—and a restyled exterior tuned for aerodynamic efficiency are the only clues as to how Mitsubishi plans on achieving such lofty efficiency goals. The interior gets a design makeover, and safety features like forward-collision mitigation, lane-departure warning, and adaptive cruise control will be available. The big news, mechanically, is a new engine balance shaft that reportedly provides quicker and smoother acceleration while maintaining the vehicle's 31-mpg highway number. The differentiating details that make it a Limited Edition include blackout side mirrors, wheel-arch trim, and roof rails; dark-chrome aluminum wheels; and "Limited Edition" badging. Interior touches include a new six-way adjustable power driver's seat, aluminum pedals, leather parking-brake lever, and available two-tone gray and black leather seating surfaces. Check back here for the official details on both Outlanders when they debut at the L.A. show on November 29th.
