Volkswagen E-Bugster Goes Roadster for Chinese Debut [Beijing Auto Show]

Volkswagen E-Bugster Cabriolet concept

In an absence of actual news, Volkswagen has chosen to synthesize some by bringing an altered version of its E-Bugster concept to the 2012 Beijing show. It's the same car we saw in Detroit, except now the removable top has been—hey, presto—removed.

In speedster form, the two-seat electric Beetle trades its white roof for a white tonneau. The cover wraps around a pair of humps and dips down between the seats. And that's it for the changes; the car still has the electric powertrain from the upcoming Golf blue-e-motion (which may end up being called E-Golf when it sees production). The 700-plus-pound battery pack gives the car a theoretical range of 100 miles.

While we don't expect VW to build a Beetle roadster like this any time soon, a Beetle convertible is definitely planned; that car should make its debut later this year at the L.A. auto show. An electrified Beetle is a possibility at some point, but we expect the company will want to evaluate the success of the battery-fed Golf before adding any more EV models.
