Maserati’s Baby Quattroporte Could Be Called “Levante” Based on Trademark Application

Maserati's upcoming smaller sedan—about the size of a BMW 5-series—could be called Levante. The company filed an application to trademark the name in Europe at the end of December.

Levante means "east" or "rising" in Italian, the latter in reference to the sun. Automakers don't necessarily use vehicle names that they trademark. Vehicle names can change many times during planning phases, and some names merely are being reserved for potential future use. Historical names also are often registered to ensure other companies don't use them. Maserati has trademarked but not used several vehicle names in the past few years, including Ghibli (a historic name for the marque), Milia, and Cinqueporte.

Whatever it's called, we expect the smaller Maserati sedan to arrive at the end of 2013 or early 2014. It likely will use a turbocharged version of Chrysler's Pentastar V-6 engine and could feature a version of Ferrari's clever, two-gearbox all-wheel-drive system from the FF.
