Italdesign Giugiaro’s Brivido is a Hybrid Sports Coupe with VW Running Gear [Geneva Auto Show]

Since Volkswagen bought a majority stake in Italdesign Giugiaro, the design house has been creating wacky and sexy concepts built using components from the VW Group's parts bin. The Brivido, which was revealed in Geneva, falls on the attractive side of things. The car's name means "thrill" in English—it's at least somewhat thrilling to look at, but we think the designers also are referring to the high-power hybrid setup inside.  The Brivido is a functional prototype, complete with a rear-wheel-drive hybrid powertrain similar to that used in the Porsche Panamera S hybrid, as well as the (all-wheel-drive) VW Touareg hybrid and Porsche Cayenne S hybrid. Here, the supercharged 3.0-liter V-6 makes 360 hp and 339 lb-ft of torque; the electric motor is sandwiched between the engine and an eight-speed automatic transmission, providing combined output of 408 hp and 443 lb-ft of torque. This hybrid coupe will make the sprint to 62 mph in a claimed 5.8 seconds and continue all the way to 171 mph. While the exterior is relatively tame for a design concept—we think it's pretty handsome, actually—the Brivido's interior is on complete display overload. There are TFT gauges for the driver and the front passenger, a pair of monitors that function as side-view mirrors, and a central touch screen. Oh, and a pop-out iPad. In addition to the red coupe, Giugiaro displayed a full-scale mockup of a Brivido race car. It was painted with striping inspired by the Martini Racing livery and wore a big wing on the back.
