Infiniti Emerg-E Concept at the 2012 International Geneva Motor Show

Looks like: Infiniti intends to go ahead with building its first halo vehicle   Defining characteristics: mid-engine, two-seater coupe, plug-in hybrid electric  Ridiculous features: 0-130 mph in 30 seconds  Chances of being mass-produced: 50/50 Unlike Lexus and Acura, which had halo vehicles like the SC and NSX to get the attention of leery American luxury car shoppers back in the late 1980s, Infiniti has never really had a honest halo vehicle. That may be about to change, in the guise of the Infiniti Emerg-E Concept. The concept is a mid-engine, rear-wheel drive, 2-door coupe, with dual electric motors that product 400-horsepower, capable of propelling the model from 0-60 mph in about four seconds, says the automaker. Has that raised your interest? The concept is a serial hybrid, in a similar vein to the Chevy Volt, only amped up: there's a three-cylinder gasoline generator, lithium-ion batteries, four inverters and the pair of electric engines, powering each individual rear-wheel separately. When plugged in — for about 10 hours with a normal wall outlet — the model has a capable electric range of 30 miles, on gasoline, the model can travel up to 300 miles. The concept isn't totally alien these days; Cadillac already said it's going to build a plug-in luxury coupe, called the ELR. Infiniti adds that the concept signals the luxury carmakers intent to produce a "bold halo model befitting [of] the brand." That's a promising sign that some sort of incarnation of Emerg-E is coming to Infiniti, a perfect complement to what will likely be a pretty plebian looking compact electric Infiniti that is also coming soon.
