Porsche has turned its GTS transmogrifier toward its newest model and created a more sporting Macan for the small crossover's third model year. As you'd expect given the GTS treatments applied to the rest of the lineup—Boxster, Cayman, 911, Panamera, and Cayenne—this Macan packs additional power, several chassis tweaks, and special aesthetic touches inside and out.
-Thanks to a retuned ECU, the Macan S's twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 makes 20 additional horsepower and 30 additional lb-ft of torque, for new totals of 360 and 369. The engine is paired with Porsche's seven-speed dual-clutch automatic and is said to get the Macan GTS to 60 mph in 4.8 seconds if you pony up the bucks for the Sport Chrono package and its launch-control function. Of course, that time is probably conservative; we achieved a run of 4.6 seconds in our test of a Sport Chrono–equipped Macan S. Top speed is stated as 159 mph.
-The front brakes are upgraded from the S's 13.8-inch rotors to the Turbo's 14.2-inch pieces, although the rears stay at 13.0 inches. Up front, six-piston monoblock calipers do the squeezing, while single-piston floating calipers are used at the rear. All four calipers are painted red for free. An adjustable air suspension is standard, and the GTS sits 0.4-inch closer to the ground than does the Turbo.
-The cabin has been stuffed with sport seats with microsuede inserts and GTS headrest logos, and leather has been applied to almost every other surface. Navigation isn't standard, but Bluetooth and USB connectivity are. If you don't upgrade to the fancy nav system, you can at least order Apple CarPlay functionality; get the nav and you can then also add LTE Wi-Fi. An optional GTS interior bundle nets a saucy red tachometer dial, as well as contrasting seatbelts, headrest logos, and cabin stitching.
-The stylistic changes will be familiar to those who have seen a Porsche GTS model: blacked-out badging and trim for the windows and lower fascias, as well as black wheels (20-inchers in this case). The door embellishments are matte black and have glossy GTS logos, and LED headlamps are among the options. The 2017 Macan GTS goes on sale next March at a price of just over $68,000.
