Real Hoopties of New Jersey LeMons Inspections

Real Hoopties of New Jersey LeMons Inspections

Veteran observers of East Region LeMons races will take a peek at this weekend's Real Hoopties of New Jersey roster at NJMP and predict—with a reasonable degree of accuracy—that the East's podium regulars will continue their success. (Said regulars, while we're on the subject, are a Saab-powered Nissan, a phalanx of Volvo 240s, and a really old dude in a mostly stock Accord.)

There's no reason for us to think otherwise, so the real anticipation this weekend surrounds the races much further south of the podium positions. And let's not beat around the bush: The vast majority of this weekend's drama will focus on the battle between the Rolls-Royce and the upside-down Camaro…as is the case with all great road races.

The Rolls—a 1969 Silver Shadow—is the latest entry from 3 Pedal Mafia. It's the first LeMons Roller (as a quick aside, we're still waiting for the first Ferrari), and as such is highly likely to spark lots of knuckle-dragging internet discussion of the "$500 MY ASS!" variety. Which is fine—the payoff of watching a road-racing Rolls is worth plenty of online abuse—but for the record, a title-less Silver Shadow that smells like mold and runs on seven cylinders really ain't worth a whole lot.

The Rolls' primary competition in the battle for internet attention span is Speedycop's Upside Down Camaro. LeMons connoisseurs know that the UDC is the spiritual successor of the Backwards Truck (just Google it), and it promises to inspire the same panic-laughter-awe response. The UDC is based on a 1.3-liter Ford Festiva unibody—obviously—and thus isn't likely to top the leaderboards. But how will it fare against the mustiest Rolls-Royce that doesn't currently reside underwater?

There's only one way to find out.
