Toyota's compact sedan enters model-year 2014 fully redesigned with edgier styling, a revised powertrain and affordable prices. When the 2014 Corolla goes on sale this fall, it'll start at $17,610, including destination. That's $570 more than the 2013 Corolla in base LE trim, but prices for other trims decrease for 2014.

Available models include base L, LE, S and the new LE Eco trim. Under the hood is a revised version of the 2013's 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine. It's standard on L, LE and S trim levels. The LE Eco uses the same engine but with a new type of continuous valve timing to improve efficiency. Toyota said in a statement that the LE Eco will return 42 mpg on the highway, "giving it the best highway fuel economy in the class for a vehicle equipped with an automatic transmission," (excluding EVs, hybrids and diesels). This marks a big jump from the 2013 Corolla's disappointing fuel economy: 26/34/29 mpg city/highway/combined.

The base price is for the L model with the new six-speed manual transmission; standards include LED low-beam headlamps and daytime running lights, Bluetooth connectivity and eight airbags. A driver-knee airbag and passenger seat cushion airbag are new this year. The L version with the four-speed automatic starts at $18,210.

Midlevel LE models add a backup camera, automatic climate control, cruise control, keyless entry, a 6.1-inch touch-screen with the Entune multimedia system and a continuously variable automatic  transmission. This version offers more features than the outgoing LE for a minor price increase; the 2014 LE starts at $19,110 — $120 more than the model-year 2013 version.

The sport-oriented S model starts at $19,810, $60 less than last year's S version. Additions to this trim include more aggressive front styling, a specific suspension, paddle shifters, a sport gauge cluster, glossy black interior and exterior trim, sport seats and a leather-wrapped steering wheel.

At the top of the lineup, the LE Eco model starts at $19,510. Options across the board include a moonrooof, navigation, push-button start and Softex faux leather seats and surfaces.
