Tested: Turbocharged Four-Cylinder BMW 528i

The year 2012 is awash in apocalyptic predictions, and here's ours: BMW will stop offering a naturally aspirated inline six-cylinder engine this year. Okay, so that doesn't quite rank up there with the end of the world, but we'll feel the loss of BMW's naturally ­aspirated 3.0-liter six intensely. It's a rev-happy, smooth yet aggressive-sounding engine that's already been removed from the Z4, the 5-series, and the new 3-series. Its replacement is a turbocharged and intercooled 2.0-liter four that promises improved fuel efficiency and more torque. We've seen the smaller engine do good work in the Z4, but we wondered if and how the boosted four would deal with a 3883-pound 5-series sedan.
