Spied: 2013 Porsche 911 GT3

More than any other carmaker, Porsche knows how to play the game of derivatives and special editions. The 911—which currently includes the 997 and its successor, the 991—comes in 18 variations here; in Germany, that number is 22. This rear-engined sports car is quite rightfully considered the quintessential Porsche. But what's the quintessential 911? Some would say it's the base 911 Carrera or perhaps the 911 Carrera S. Others would propose the monster 911 Turbo or its ultra-powerful GT2 derivative. Purists, however, have another favorite: the 911 GT3, which is extremely lightweight, packs a high-revving naturally aspirated engine, and is created for the racetrack.

Count us among the purists. We've enjoyed every GT3 so far—we love its manual transmission, its singing boxer engine, and its deliberate lack of heavy and only semi-helpful electronic gadgets. In any other 911, there could be a pretender or a showoff behind the wheel. Not in the GT3; this car challenges its driver.

And so we're happy to report that the great GT3 story is certain to continue. Our spy photographers have caught semi-camouflaged prototypes in northern Sweden, with photos revealing a 991 with extra-large (and presumably extra-light) wheels, a fixed rear spoiler, and central exhaust outlets. The series-production model will have a specific front fascia as well.

In true 911 evolution style, the new GT3 should solidly beat the car it replaces. It's expected to be significantly lighter than the last model, with a longer wheelbase and engine output approaching 500 hp. Racing versions are sure to follow. And as has been the case in the past, the next 911 GT3 will be more expensive than the Carrera S but significantly cheaper than the upcoming 911 Turbo. Chances are it will remain the favorite 911 of many purists.
