The next-generation Volvo V40 hatchback and the Chinese-built S60L sedan will come to the U.S., according to senior vice president of marketing Alain Visser.
--
Visser, quoted in Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf (and reported via Autoweek) said the next V40 was designed for both Europe and the U.S. and is intended to debut in the 2017 timeframe. It will replace the current model pictured above and be based on the Volvo-Geely Compact Modular Architecture. Visser also said the extended-wheelbase S60L sedan, currently a Chinese-only special, would arrive here later this year. While this news isn't entirely new—we heard rumblings as far back as last summer—it is the first solid confirmation.

Other tidbits: The V40, like all future Volvos, will be offered with a gas-electric hybrid powertrain. A lifted crossover version called the XC40 (replacing the current V40 Cross Country available overseas) also will be introduced (as we reported last year), although we're not yet clear if that's bound for our shores. We're also unsure how the S60L fits in alongside the forthcoming flagship S90, but we didn't necessarily ask for the S60 Cross Country, either, but we have that already. So what's one more odd duck from Volvo?
