Stop-Go System Not Coming to 2012 Kia Rio

One of the many features meant to distinguish the Kia Rio from its platform mate, the Hyundai Accent, was its advanced technology, including a backup camera, Microsoft UVO voice-recognition system and an available stop/start system called Idle Stop and Go. The system, however, never showed up on the 2012 Kia Rio and it never will, said Kia spokesman James Hope. "ISG was delayed. We delayed it because Kia wanted the system to meet the high expectations of our customers," Hope said. Instead, the system will be available on the 2013 Kia Rio when the model goes on sale later this summer. The ISG system adds 1 mpg to the Rio's city gas mileage for an EPA-estimated rating of 31/40 mpg city/highway. For some, the 1 mpg improvement might not be worth that extra cost. It all depends on your type of driving; EPA estimates don't truly reflect the benefits of stop/start technology under its current testing methodologies. The system is only available on Rio EX trims: The Rio EX sedan is priced at $17,250; the hatchback starts at $17,450 (both prices include a $750 destination fee). The stop/start system is a $400 option that's tied to the Convenience Package (backup camera, touch-screen, UVO), which is another $1,150.
