If  you haven't noticed that diesels are infiltrating American roads, it's probably because they no longer trail black smoke. But $4 gasoline has made diesels viable here, as have German brands that have improved upon this technology in response to European market-engineering. Which is a funny thing: Whereas European countries—their cities a hybrid-driver's dream—push oil burners, the U.S. incentivizes EVs and hybrids even though our kind of driving calls for the long range and high torque that diesels provide.
