Smoking Diesels: Hey, Look, We Charted U.S.-Market Diesel Take Rates, Prices, MPG, and More

If  you haven't noticed that diesels are infiltrating American roads, it's probably because they no longer trail black smoke. But $4 gasoline has made diesels viable here, as have German brands that have improved upon this technology in response to European market-engineering. Which is a funny thing: Whereas European countries—their cities a hybrid-driver's dream—push oil burners, the U.S. incentivizes EVs and hybrids even though our kind of driving calls for the long range and high torque that diesels provide. But even if the government doesn't get it, this chart shows that the people do—the rich and frugal ones, at least. (more…)
