May 2012 Sales: What the Headlines Don’t Tell You


By all accounts, the U.S. economy stalled in May, with job growth coming woefully short of what was projected—and far shorter still of what was needed. The impact could be seen on automotive sales, which were off the pace from earlier months this year. Even if they couldn't compete with March, several automakers still reported solid sales numbers and strong profits. One of the upsides to the Chrysler and GM bankruptcies, as well as the not-in-bankruptcy dieting that Ford did, is that all three companies should have cut their costs enough that they can be profitable even if business slows down.
