First Look: 2013 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT

2013 SLS AMG GT

  • Competes with: 2012 Aston Martin DB9, 2012 Audi R8
  • Looks like: the SLS gets a bit more powerful
  • Drivetrain: 583-hp, 6.3-liter V-8 with seven-speed automatic transmission
  • Hits dealerships: Mid-November 2012

After just two model years, the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG gets a subtle refresh for 2013, gaining a little horsepower, some styling updates and a new name: the SLS AMG GT.

The engine is a little more powerful than last year's model because of changes to the engine mapping profile and an increase in peak combustion pressure. Power is now rated at 583 hp and 479 pounds-feet of torque for the 6.3-liter V-8, up 20 hp from last model year.

As a result, the seven-speed double-clutch transmission has also been optimized for quicker shift times. Mercedes says there's a redeveloped suspension, too, featuring stiffer and more aggressive springs and dampers.

Acceleration from zero to 60 mph is now pegged at 3.6 seconds with an electronically limited top speed of 197 mph.

Stylistically, the SLS AMG GT has been updated with darkened headlamps and taillamps, unique wheel designs and red-painted brake calipers. The cabin gets red seat belts, red-trimmed floormats and red contrast stitching throughout the interior with high-gloss black trim.

The SLS is still available in coupe and roadster body styles. No word on pricing, but we expect it to start just short of $200,000, like the previous model. The 2013 SLS AMG GT goes on sale in mid-November.
