Best Selling Cars Around The Globe: Only In Monaco…

After a very eventful April World Round-up, the Top 100 best-selling models worldwide over the First Quarter of 2012 and the Top 265 best-selling models in China in April, I have decided to go from huge to tiny, from mainstream to boutique, from… well you get it.

And this week I give you: Monaco!

Not interested? I find it hard to believe… Where else will you see 2 Porsches in the Top 10 best-sellers? What's that? Nowhere else? You betcha. But fine, there are 163 additional countries and territories for you to visit in my blog, but none of them as extravagant as the one I'm about to explore. You can still click to check them all out one by one though!

So I said two Porsches in the Top 10…wait until you see where Bentley ranks…

Monaco is the richest country in the world with a GDP per capita of $176,676. It is also the only country on the planet where each inhabitant has a car: at 35,800 cars for 35,986 inhabitants, the ratio is 995 cars per thousand! Actually this is wrong - a lot of Monegasques have more than one car. Those damn babies, children, infirm, and the few inmates in Monegassian jails ruin an average that makes automakers the world over regard Monaco as dreamland.

In Monaco there are an estimated 2,000 millionaires and 50 billionaires, and we're about to find out what cars they buy…

But first a bit of clarification: this article is about the best-selling models in Monaco. For an introduction to the Monegasque car market click here and for the Top 50 best-selling brands in Monaco click here. Rich people never get tired of buying cars, and as a result in 2011 new car sales in Monaco are up 13% on 2010 and 19% on 2009 to 2,524 registrations…

The Monegasque models ranking is unique in the world: it is a mix of posh minis, small enough to be parked anywhere in the city-state, extravagant SUVs and classy sedans with (nearly) no Frenchies in sight – a paradox as Monaco is nestled within France…  In a way, Monaco is a car market as imagined by most car bloggers. A world where Porsches,  Bentleys, BMWs, Audis and Mercedes are volume models, and where minis take over the role as tenders to the super yachts.

The top of the ranking is biased by the one-off registration of 200 BMW 7 Series for the Royal Wedding in order to display Monaco license plates for the occasion, with all models returned to BMW after the festivities. This means the BMW 7 Series is #1 in Monaco in 2011 with 212 sales and an 8.4% share.

But the 'real' best-sellers are below and the race was extremely close: the Audi A3 is #2 overall with 98 units and 3.8%, followed by the Mini at 97 and the Audi A4 at 96.

The Smart Fortwo is #5, the Fiat 500 #6  and the Mini Countryman #7.

As mentioned above, there are two Porsches in the Top 10: the Cayenne ranks 9th with 51 sales and 2% share…

…and the Porsche 911 is #10 at 42 units and 1.7%, without a doubt the 2 models' highest rankings worldwide.

There are a few other prestigious cars in the 2011 Monegasque Top 30, but the most impressive is clearly the Bentley Continental at an amazing 20th place thanks to 28 sales for a 1.1% market share…

Only one French model manages to claw its way into the Top 30: the Renault Clio at #29. Among Frenchies, only the Peugeot 207 (#35) and Renault Twingo (#40) manage to break into the Top 40, making Ferrari a more popular brand than both Citroen and Peugeot in the Principality!

Further down, the Aston Martin Vantage is #42, Ferrari 458 Italia #43, Ferrari California #47, Ferrari FF #58, Mercedes SLS #76, Ferrari 599 GTO #80, Rolls-Royce Ghost #92, Aston Martin Cygnet #121, Bentley Mulsanne #125 and the McLaren MP4 12C #135 with 3 units sold.
