2012 Hyundai Azera: Car Seat Check

Hyundai's full-size sedan was redesigned for 2012 and can count among its strengths high-quality interior materials, a competent powertrain and a cavernous backseat. The Azera has plenty of room for two child-safety seats, and a wide, flat bottom seat cushion and easy to locate Latch anchors help make this a car-seat-friendly car. For the Car Seat Check, we use a Graco SnugRide 30 rear-facing infant-safety seat, a Britax Roundabout convertible child-safety seat and Graco high-back TurboBooster seat. The front seats are adjusted to a comfortable position for a 5-foot-5 driver and a 6-foot-1 passenger. The three child seats are installed in the second row. The booster seat sits behind the driver's seat, and the infant seat and convertible seats are installed behind the passenger seat. We also install the infant seat in the second row's middle seat with the booster and convertible in the outboard seats to see if three car seats will fit. If there's a third row, we install the booster seat and a forward-facing convertible. Here's how the Hyundai Azera did in Cars.com's Car Seat Check: Latch system: There are two sets of Latch anchors in the outboard seats. They're easy to access because the anchors are set high in the seat bight, where the back and bottom cushions meet. The anchors are positioned fairly close to each other, which complicated the installation of the rear-facing convertible. Booster seat: The booster had plenty of room on the wide, flat seat. The Azera's buckles are on the floppy side and small, so they might be challenging for kids to use independently. They also stick out quite a bit, though, which should make grabbing them a little easier. Convertible seat: The Azera's head restraints prevented the forward-facing convertible from fitting flat on the seat. We removed them to ensure the car seat was at the correct angle. There are three tether anchors on the rear shelf, and they sit underneath large plastic covers. The anchors themselves were really easy to access and had plenty of clearance around them. Installing the convertible seat in the rear-facing position was a littler tougher because the Azera's buckles blocked access to the Latch anchors. To get the rear convertible to fit, we had to move the front passenger seat up just a bit; the passenger still had a comfortable amount of legroom. Infant-safety seat: The infant seat fit well on the seat and was easy to install using its traditional Latch connectors. Since the middle seat in Azera's second-row flips down to become an armrest, this isn't a safe place for a rear-facing car seat. It could flip down and injure the child in an accident. How many car seats fit in the second row? Two Editor's note: For three car seats — infant-safety seat, convertible and booster seats — to fit in a car, our criterion is that a child sitting in the booster seat must be able to reach the seat belt buckle. Parents should also remember that they can use the Latch system or a seat belt to install a car seat.
