Image of Mazda 3 Sedan’s Tuckus Causes Mild Internet Ruckus

A purported image of the 2014 Mazda 3 Sedan's hindquarters has recently surfaced from the murky depths of the internet. The hatch-endowed version of the latest Mazda 3 has been on official display since earlier this month, and considering that the Mazda 3 Sedan will almost certainly share its styling from the B-pillar forward with the hatch, this image, if authentic, essentially reveals the entire car.

We caught wind of it on the Carscoops website, where a commenter attributed the image to Mazda's Canadian Facebook page, where it reportedly made a brief but memorable appearance before being removed. Mazda has no comment.

The background is the same as in an official Mazda 3 hatchback photograph we recently published, and given the Mazda 3 hatchback's strong familial resemblance to the Mazda 6, it wouldn't be hard for a budding computer artiste to conjure up a mini-me Mazda 3 Sedan. The one-dimensional, shadow-less North American-market license plate is particularly suspicious, but it looked just as goofy in the official hatchback shots. On the other hand, it's not uncommon for manufacturers to shoot photographs of different models on the same set to save on setup and production costs.

Real or not, you can bet Mazda is hoping the 3 sedan's pending official reveal will pay off in the U.S. market where small sedans (Jetta/Golf anyone?) routinely outsell their hatchback counterparts.
