Go, Go, Gullwing! Or: A Modern Review of a 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL

I've just spent three days driving a 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing. I say this not to brag, but because it feels good to say. I've been mumbling those words to myself a lot, actually. I drove the Gullwing through Italy, as hard as any Italian would, on the Mille Miglia Storica. A relentless campaign of sleep deprivation, carbon-monoxide poisoning, and something wondrous called Crema di Lardo, the Mille Miglia (literally "1000 miles") is a quasi re-creation of the original 1927–'57 endurance race. Only now it's not a quest for the absolute fastest time over closed roads, but an exercise in speed-tourism, passing timed stages and checkpoints along the way. This event gets yearly ink in car mags, but it's not something anyone can just go and do. You need a sports car built between 1927 and 1957, and it also helps to be loaded: The basic entry fee is €7500 and even then you have to know someone to get in. It is absolutely grueling and features long stretches of highly intense driving, but it's not a race and it's not really even a rally and, hey, we're all winners here—just look at our million-dollar vintage cars.  READ MORE ››
