Ride Is Over for Shelby Ford Mustang GT350

Model-year 2014 will be the Shelby Ford Mustang GT350's last. The aftermarket customizing firm founded by the late Carroll Shelby announced that it's ending production of the souped-up pony car. Shelby said it will take new orders for the car through the end of this year.

"The model's limited production has long been part of its appeal. When this car was unveiled, we promised that the modern version of the Shelby GT350 would be available for a limited run. This decision was made to preserve the Shelby American built GT350's collectability and value. We've been preparing for this day since Shelby American launched this in 2010," John Luft, president of Shelby American, said in a statement.

Shelby's customization of the GT350 costs $26,995 — on top of the Mustang's $31,095 base price — and includes features like body add-ons, 19-inch aluminum alloy wheels, a racing suspension and sport-tuned brakes; shoppers can also add a supercharger and bump horsepower to 624 hp for an additional $8,500.

Although the GT350's days are numbered, the customizer said production of other models will continue, including the Shelby GTS, GT500 Super Snake and Shelby 1000, Shelby Raptor muscle truck and Shelby Focus ST. And according to Luft, the company has big plans. "In true Carroll Shelby fashion, we're planning our next ultimate performance Shelby model," he said. Perhaps it's a version of the redesigned Mustang scheduled for model-year 2015.
