Citroën's Hybrid Air technology, which it debuted at the 2013 Geneva auto show, is many things. Clever, bold, and unique, Hybrid Air also is apparently a bit too expensive for the beleaguered French automaker. According to Automotive News, Citroën is looking for partners to help fund Hybrid Air development and to share the technology with. The AN report is hardly surprising—Hybrid Air shares little with typical gas-electric hybrids, mostly because it isn't a gas-electric hybrid powertrain. Instead, it uses pressurized hydraulic fluid to power a gas-engine-augmenting hydraulic motor. The technology is similar to a setup cooked up by the EPA and UPS for delivery trucks, and mechanically it's relatively straightforward and doesn't require heavy batteries. Cooking up something so different and new is bound to cost some serious euros, euros PSA Citroën probably doesn't have right now.
As to who PSA Citroën is looking to shack up with? It sounds like anyone—although it does have a strategic partnership in place with GM to collaborate on small-car engines and platforms.
