2014 Chevrolet Camaro: Up Close

With new front and rear styling, the 2014 Chevrolet Camaro is different up front, but I wouldn't necessarily say it's better or worse. Did Ultimate Fighting Championship fighter Chuck Liddell with his signature mohawk act as inspiration for the hood heat extractor?

The rear styling is what stands out compared to the 2013. New taillights ditch the previous cheap chrome-trimmed quad taillights in favor of dual rectangular ones that better mimic a classic first-generation Camaro. Fans of the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette can no longer complain it has Camaro taillights.

The real winner, however, is the new 2014 Z/28. The Z/28 is an extreme track edition that cuts out 300 pounds of unnecessary weight and removes speakers, sound insulation and air conditioning, which is optional. The Z/28 on display wore a matte white exterior color and had black wheels that gave the car an especially menacing look.

I'm not completely sold on the Z/28's aero enhancements with the awkward front splitter, massive bird-dish rear spoiler and side ground effects — maybe if they were a bare dull plastic or exposed carbon fiber. The gloss-black finish isn't particularly race-like, and that front splitter looks ripe for breaking over a driveway curb. But if it works and makes the car faster on the track then who really cares what it looks like.
