With a lineage descended from LeMans-inspired gullwings, few cars have the chutzpah of the Mercedes-Benz SL. Steeped in 60 years of tradition and polished to near-perfection, it has been for most of its existence an embodiment of success, as well as the de facto baseline for high-end convertibles. On the other hand, a couple of decades ago, Stuttgart allowed the SL to grow soft in the middle; the SL of the 1980s and 1990s maintained its regal fitments but was oft dismissed by sports-car cognoscenti as a Beverly Hills shopping cart, a reward for marrying into a successful dental practice.  READ MORE ››
