First Peek: Tesla Model S, the all-electric 4-door sedan

We're crazy about the all-electric Tesla Roadster, and now here's a first look at Tesla's second act, the four-door, 5-passenger Tesla Model S. Its specs are similar to the Roadster, where its range is about the same at 240 miles per charge, but it's not quite as quick, with a 0-60 time of less than 6 seconds. Still, that's fast.

Want to pick up your own Tesla? Not so fast. The company just unceremoniously laid off most of its Detroit-area workers (25% of its total workforce) and fired its CEO, admitting it is "refocusing." The $109,000 Tesla Roadster is constantly "under development," and available only on extended backorder.

This Model S, if it ever gets built, will cost $60,000, and if Tesla can get through what its VP Darryl Siry calls "a difficult nine months," you might be able to drive this baby home by late 2010. Given today's economic situation, a lot can happen in two years.
