As the Takata airbag recall story continues to unfold, Honda has announced that it is instituting a voluntary advertising campaign urging owners of Honda and Acura automobiles to check for open airbag and safety recalls that may effect their vehicle. Set to begin on Monday, March 16, the multi-million-dollar campaign will reach across print, digital, and radio. Though the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration introduced a VIN search tool earlier this year to simplify the task of checking for a recall notice, many owners may still be unaware of the service. According to Honda, the new ad campaign is a "strong call to action" that is designed to "break through clutter, [and] grab the attention of customers driving the affected vehicles, and urge that they get the repairs as soon as possible."
The campaign, which comes on the heels of Honda's recent endorsement of the RECALL mandatory recall repair bill, will begin with full-page advertisements in 120 newspapers and 30-second radio spots in more than 110 markets, prioritizing the eleven states and U.S. territories that have been "identified by Honda as representing the greatest risk to affected owners." (It is believed that high humidity contributes to a greater risk of inflator rupture in certain older-model Takata front airbags.) The advertisements will appear in both English and Spanish. The campaign will also employ social media, sponsored, customized Facebook posts appearing in owners' timelines.

Although Honda recommends owners of affected vehicles contact their dealers immediately, it does acknowledge that the current availability of replacement parts, as well as the time required to complete repairs, could lead to delays for individual customers. To accelerate the pace of airbag inflator repairs, Honda has secured agreements with two additional inflator suppliers, and expects replacement part capacity to fully meet demand by later this Spring.
