Cadillac Bins Plans of $100K Flagship Sedan, Report Says

Cadillac Ciel concept

Cadillac had plans for a flagship sedan that would take visual cues from this Ciel concept. Not anymore.

Cadillac has axed plans to launch a flagship sedan, according to a report in Automotive News. This was supposed to be the more upscale of two proposed Cadillac models based on GM's rear-wheel-drive Omega platform. The flagship was set to be priced at $100,000 or more.

According to sources cited by Automotive News, GM management decided the flagship would not meet the company's profitability targets. The second of Cadillac's Omega proposals, a lower-priced—in comparison to the $100K design—rear-wheel-drive sedan that eventually will replace the front-wheel-drive XTS and be positioned nearer to the defunct DTS, remains on track to be launched around 2016.

Under the regime of Dan Akerson, GM has been more scrutinous in terms of the profitability of each proposed model. Another victim of this approach has been the ATS convertible, a softtop two-door performance car that would have taken direct aim at the Audi A5 cabriolet and the upcoming BMW 4-series cabriolet.

Cadillac's flagship, which would have looked something like a sedan interpretation of the brand's Ciel concept, could be resurrected down the road. And it should be, given Caddy's ambitions to be one of the world's leading luxury automakers. Lincoln, on the other hand, can rejoice. Making up ground on its chief competitor has just become quite a bit easier.
