Track Out: BMW Launching M Power Track-Day Data-Acquisition App

2014 BMW M Power app

At the launch event for the 2014 M6 Gran Coupe, BMW also introduced a new, cool iPhone app dubbed M Power. The tool allows owners to record their track-day shenanigans and digitally interact with other drivers. It differs from the M Power Meter app currently available in Apple's iTunes store in that it's much deeper and can actually access vehicle sensors in Bimmers equipped with BMW Apps software.

That access to vehicle sensors is key, because it allows the M Power app to display throttle position, braking, and engine speed and overlay that info onto maps of racetracks. There will be several built-in maps, but the app also will be able to "learn" unknown circuits and save them for future analysis. The app also can record g-force, acceleration, access environmental sensors, and tap into GPS location and speed information, giving users a comprehensive look at their track day excursions. Cooler still, users will be able to digitally compare their performances against their friends' efforts on the same track, or compare two of your own lap times against one another.

The app's bragging-rights facilitation is rounded out by a function that lets users share their data with friends via e-mail, Twitter, and Facebook. BMW plans to release the M Power app in the iTunes store later this summer.
