SRT Unveils Viper GT3-R in Le Mans, Where It Won’t Race

From the very beginning, the Dodge Viper built a great racing history. The fifth generation of the vehicle, now under the SRT brand, aims to carry on with that tradition. That's why the brand is debuting the Viper GT3-R at the 24 Hours of Le Mans; the vehicle will be available for purchase later this year, setting buyers back $459,000. The car won't be available to race this season, however.

The race-destined Viper GT3-R isn't street legal; it was developed in cooperation with Riley Technologies, a specialized engineering house located in Mooresville, North Carolina. The new racer is a close relative of the only moderately modified Viper GTS-R, which competes in the GTE Pro class and also was built by SRT and Riley Technologies.

Visually, the Viper GT3-R stands out thanks to its ultra-wide stance and its aerodynamics package, complete with a massive rear wing. The braking system has been upgraded with six-piston calipers up front and four-piston calipers in the rear. Under the hood, the V-10 engine has been optimized for power, and there is an Xtrac six-speed sequential transmission and a multi-plate racing clutch. The GT3-R's 8.4-liter V-10 makes 680 horsepower at 6200 rpm, up from the street version's 640 horses at 6150 rpm. Torque jumps from 600 lb-ft at 4950 rpm to 640 lb-ft at 5100 rpm.

Expect the most awesome derivative yet of the fifth-generation Viper to show up at racetracks around the world next year. It will be legal for competition in five racing series, including FIA GT3. Our only gripe is that we can't watch this monster-looking racer take to the Circuit de la Sarthe this weekend for the 2013 edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
