| After a 17-year hiatus, Chevrolet returns to the rear-drive performance sedan game: Pricing for the 2014 Chevy SS will start at $44,470 when it hits showroom floors this fall. With its 415-hp, 6.2-liter V-8 and six-speed automatic transmission, it assumes the throne vacated by the late and great Pontiac G8 while taking aim at the Chrysler 300 SRT8, the Dodge Charger SRT8, and the all-wheel-drive Ford Taurus SHO. In terms of both price and power, the SS slots in ahead of the Taurus SHO (365 horsepower, $40,695) but behind the Charger SRT8 (470 horsepower, $47,245) and 300 SRT8 (470 horsepower, $50,245). Chevy estimates the SS will do 0–60 in "about five seconds." While we'll wait until we strap our testing equipment to the SS for our own numbers, our most recent testing data puts that performance on par with the SHO (5.2 seconds) but well behind the Charger SRT8 (4.2 seconds) and the 300 SRT8 (4.4 seconds). Only one model will be offered, with standard features including Chevrolet MyLink with touch screen and nav, a Bose premium audio system with satellite radio, a color head-up display, heated and ventilated front seats, a rearview camera with rear-park assist, blind-spot alert and lane-departure warning, and keyless entry with push-button start. Only two options will be available: a power sunroof for $900 and a full-size spare tire for $500. Standard performance features include 14-inch front Brembo brakes with two-piece rotors and four-piston calipers. Forged aluminum 19-inch wheels are shod with 245/40ZR tires at the front and 275/35ZR rubber at the rear. And while the SS will not offer a manual transmission as we had hoped, its six-speed automatic can be shifted courtesy of steering-wheel-mounted paddles. Chevy promises that the SS will deliver near 50/50 weight distribution, thanks in part to its aluminum hood and trunklid. Five exterior colors are available—Mystic Green, Silver Ice Metallic, Red Hot 2, Phantom Black Metallic, and Heron White—while all interiors will be Jet Black and feature sport front bucket seats.
Also as we predicted, the SS will be subject to the gas-guzzler tax (at an amount that has yet to be determined), since its LS3 V-8 is devoid of fuel-saving technology such as direct injection, variable valve timing, and cylinder deactivation.
