Remotely Interested? GM Makes Remote Start / Door Unlock Standard on 2014 Models

Right up there with other how-did-we-live-without-them-before conveniences of modern living such as TV remotes, hands-free powered tailgates, and vacuum-cleaning robots, smartphone apps for cars are making things that weren't really difficult to do in the first place even easier. GM is now making tedious chores like starting cars, activating horns and lights and unlocking doors all possible with its new RemoteLink Key Fob Services mobile app, which is a subset of services already available via the full RemoteLink mobile app. GM is offering RemoteLink Key Fob Services on all of its 2014 models—even if you don't opt to pay for the other OnStar services. Owners can download the app and use it for five years from the delivery date of their vehicle. With it, owners will be able to use the app with their smartphone to remotely start their vehicles, unlock doors, and activate its horn and lights wherever a wireless or cellular connection is available. RemoteLink Key Fob Services app utilizes that cellular or wireless connection to communicate with OnStar; OnStar sends a signal to authenticate the subscriber which then is transmitted back to the vehicle to initiate the command.

Smartphone and vehicle integration are quickly becoming an important aspect of the ownership experience. GM reports that it receives requests for remote door-unlock assistance through OnStar more than 60,000 times per month. Remote start is the most frequently employed feature by current users of the RemoteLink mobile app. But an app that lets you control a car-vacuuming, window-cleaning robot? Still waiting for that . . .
