Maintenance Made Easier: GM Adds Free Service Plan for Select 2014 Models

GM Adds Service Plan for 2014 Models

General Motors announced today that it is adding a new maintenance plan to select 2014 Buick, Chevrolet, and GMC cars, trucks, and crossovers. The plan will cover retail customers and include certain recommended services for two years or 24,000 miles—whichever comes first—and includes up to four service visits in the 24-month period. It will cover oil and filter changes, tire rotations, and 27-point vehicle inspections based on the recommended maintenance schedule and the vehicle's onboard oil-life monitor. The program will be retroactive to new 2014 models already sold and is also transferable to subsequent owners.

Chevrolet, Buick, and GMC have offered similar programs in the past in conjunction with special promotions, such as short-term Buick leases and the Silverado/Sierra closeout program, but the new program replaces those sporadic offerings with a blanket approach covering all three brands and both purchases and leases.

GM stated that the program won't cover oil changes on some alternative-fuel vehicles or tire rotations on performance cars that do not recommend them. It also noted that Cadillac has offered its 48-month/50,000-mile Premium Care since 2011 and that program will continue unchanged.

A number of other manufacturers include maintenance, including BMW, Jaguar, Mini, Volvo, and VW. Overall, GM's program appears to be very similar to Toyota Care, which covers new vehicles for 24 months or 25,000 miles, but clearly GM has thrown down a gauntlet to the rest of the domestic manufacturers. Currently, only Lincoln covers scheduled maintenance (on a level similar to Cadillac) but it will be interesting to see if the competition responds. The answer could be good news for your wallet.
