Bertone’s Aston Martin Rapide Wagon May Reach Production

Originally built as a one-off prototype, the Bertone Jet 2+2 is essentially an Aston Martin Rapide station wagon. Potentially referred to as the Rapide Shooting Brake in series production—despite it having four passenger doors—the first car was constructed to celebrate Aston's centenary as well as 60 years of collaboration with Bertone. It also served as an example of the possibilities available to well-heeled clients of Bertone Officina, the Italian company's high-end customization division.

Word first trickled out via a report from Autocar, a U.K. publication that had the good fortune to earn some seat time in the exclusive vehicle. Reportedly built for one very enthusiastic and wealthy Bertone client, the car is mechanically a near twin to the Rapide, and retains its 6.0-liter V-12 engine. Autocar reports that the debate over what the car would be called is among the issues that would need to be settled prior to even limited production.

When contacted for comment, Aston Martin said only that "the Bertone car remains a one-off and we have no plans for a production version. However we continue to watch its reception with interest." So the definitive answer is no. Or a strong maybe. Which, in the exotic-auto biz, is often another way of asking, "when can you cut the check?"
