Acura NSX Supercar is NOT Dead?

Autotelegraaf is reporting that Honda will be bringing the near-production NSX concept to Detroit in 2009. Apparently, their reporters did not do a great deal of fact checking.

On Honda's British web site, a summary of CEO Takeo Fukui's end of the year speech is available. Under the "R&D" section, the wrap-up clearly states, "The development of the NSX successor model equipped with V10 engine will be cancelled."

In his speech, Fukui indicated that the current state of the economy has forced the company to take a fresh look at their priorities. Since Honda will substantially allocate resources for energy efficiency and green technology, a 600 horsepower supercar may no longer fit into their plans.

Perhaps they will introduce the Honda / Acura NSX with a different engine. However, that could conflict with CEO Fukui's vision of a car that is better and faster than the Nissan GT-R.

We can't blame Autotelegraaf for dreaming. We hope Honda revives the NSX, too.

- The start of operations at the new R&D Center in Sakura, which was scheduled to become fully operational in 2010, will be delayed.

- Honda has decided to withdraw from all Formula One activities, making 2008 the last season of participation.

- While reassessing investment priorities, Honda will concentrate its investments on initiatives which enable Honda to survive in the rapidly changing world and achieve continuous future growth.


Further strengthening advanced environmental technologies while maintaining a long-term viewpoint
In order for Honda to sustain its business during the next 100 years of the automotive industry, it is critical for the company to further strengthen its ability to continue advancing environmental technologies and to apply them to creative and attractive products.

It will offer convincing economic benefits for customers through its excellent fuel economy. At the same time, the all-new Insight will also enable drivers to feel the joy of driving through its zippy, yet light and comfortable driving performance.

Insight sales are scheduled to begin in spring 2009. As for the price, which is the key factor for mass market penetration, Honda is targeting to offer a starting price below 2 million yen in Japan.

The all-new sporty hybrid vehicle based on the CR-Z will go on sale by the end of 2010. This vehicle is being developed to become a model which offers new value of the 'joy of driving' which only a hybrid vehicle can offer.

Honda will enhance its hybrid lineup while considering the possibility of applying hybrid technology to medium to large-size vehicles.

Production
Honda will also strengthen its manufacturing system to support sales of hybrid models. As for the hybrid motor, which is one of the key components of a hybrid system, production on a new assembly line added to the Suzuka Factory just began last month (November 2008).

Combined with the 70,000-unit capacity of the first line, total motor production capacity will be increased to 250,000 units annually. Honda will establish a production system and the capabilities to be prepared for a further increase in demand for hybrid models.

Small car model
Along with hybrid models, Honda will focus on and accelerate product development of small cars for which an increase in global demand is expected.

To minimize the impact of raw material prices, which fluctuate based on various external factors, Honda will build products with a minimal reliance on expensive materials, which will enable Honda to offer its customers products with stable cost competitiveness.

In order to fulfill strong demand from customers, especially in newly emerging countries where motorization continues to advance, Honda is making progress in the development of a new small car which will be positioned in the class below Fit with a goal to introduce it to the market in two to three years.


To further enhance its product strengths in the small-size vehicle segment, Honda will make progress in the development of small-size diesel engines.

To concentrate its resources on hybrid models and small cars, the introduction of medium to large-size diesel models in the U.S. and Japan will be delayed.

Motorcycles will support Honda in the difficult business environment

Honda’s toughness in meeting changes in the business environment comes from the global business foundation built around the three axes of motorcycles, automobiles and power products.

History shows that motorcycles remain strong in a difficult market environment and have always supported Honda in difficult times. People showed renewed interest in the value of motorcycles which consume less fuel for commuting purposes as well as for their easy-to-own/easy-to-use efficiency.

Honda is planning to install PGM-FI to all motorcycle models sold in Thailand by the end of 2009. The most important model for this FI strategy, Wave 100, will undergo a full model change in January 2009.

Wave 100 series, which is based on the Cub and thus can be called the "Asian Cub," has been a key model for Honda with annual sales of approximately 2.6 million units in seven countries mostly in the ASEAN region. With the all-new Wave 100, fuel economy was further improved. Moreover, by unifying product specifications as a strategy to pursue smooth introduction to multiple production bases, it was possible to achieve improved efficiency during the development and startup of production as well as significant cost reduction. After the introduction in Thailand, the all-new Wave 100 will be introduced sequentially to other ASEAN nations.

Electric motorcycle
Honda is currently developing a battery-powered electric motorcycle which emits no CO2 during operation, because the characteristics of a battery can be better utilized in the area of motorcycles, which are often used for short distance travel. Honda is aiming to introduce this electric motorcycle to the market about two years from now.

Power Products
In its power products business, Honda will focus also on the development of energy creation products to support a mobility society which includes automobiles and motorcycles.


Solar cell business
In October 2007, Honda Soltec began production of thin-film solar cells for residential use. In October 2008, the company entered the solar cell market for public and industrial uses in order to accommodate demands from more customers.

Compact household cogeneration unit
Honda is currently developing a new model of Honda’s ECOWILL compact household cogeneration system, with a target to introduce it to the market in two to three years. The new model will be equipped with an even smaller and more efficient core unit, a unique Honda technology, pursuing a high level of environmental performance.

Mini-tiller
Targeting the rapidly growing demand in the home gardening market in Japan, Honda will introduce a new mini-tiller with a cassette gas-based engine in spring 2009, under the product name Pianta. Honda aims to cultivate new demand by introducing a new product which uses inexpensive and easy-to-handle cassette gas as fuel source.

Top ten most polluting vehicles list dominated by supercars

It's a truism that big power requires lots of fuel. There's simply no way around it. So it's not surprising that a newly compiled top 10 list of the world's most polluting passenger cars is composed primarily of supercars. Leading the way is the Bugatti Veyron, rated at a whopping 571g/km CO2.

That's 15% higher than number two on the list, the Lamborghini Murcielago, ticking over at 495g/km CO2 in coupe form, or 500g/km as a roadster. Third through sixth place are much more closely grouped, spanning two Ferraris and the Dodge Viper in addition to one of the only non-supercars on the list: the Bentley Arnage/Azure/Brooklands, rated at 465g/km.

Ferrari's 430 Scuderia and California are downright green by comparison, emitting just 360g/km and 310g/km respectively. Some cars that might make the list - such as SSC's Ultimate Aero - aren't included due to their very small volume production and somewhat lower profiles. Near misses to the list include the Mercedes-Benz G55 AMG (392g/km) and Rolls-Royce Phantom (377g/km).

By way of comparison to some more 'normal' cars, the Nissan 350Z emits 280g/km, BMW's M3 Coupe puts out 285g/km and the Chevrolet Corvette is rated at 316g/km.

2009 SSC Ultimate Aero makes 1,287-hp, top speed comes in at 270 mph

The SSC Ultimate Aero is officially recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records as the fastest road-going car in the world. Shelby Supercars has now updated the Ultimate Aero for the 2009 model year giving it a 15 percent increase in horsepower, a revamped front fascia design, and a couple of interior upgrades.

The most significant change however is the 1-piece billet aluminum engine block which improves structural integrity and oiling capabilities allowing the Ultimate Aero to produces a total of 1,287-hp - up from  1,183-hp. We understand that you can never have enough horsepower but at what point does having too much horsepower become illegal for the road.

Either way, Shelby Supercars says that the 2009 Ultimate Aero will be able to reach world-record speeds of 270 mph beating its current record of 257 mph.

After holding the “World’s Fastest Production Car” title for the past year, the Shelby SuperCars’ Ultimate Aero is receiving several refinements for the 2009 model year. The SSC engineering team equipped the 2009 Ultimate Aero with a 15% increase in horsepower, a revamped front fascia design, and an array of important interior upgrades. The most substantial change is an SSC-designed, 1-piece billet aluminum engine block. A milestone for the limited-production automobile manufacturer, the new block improves structural integrity and oiling capabilities allowing SSC to boost the power output to 1287 horsepower while improving durability.


Armed with the more powerful new engine, the ‘09 Ultimate Aero will be able to reach world-record speeds of 270 MPH, raising the benchmark for supercars and pushing the limits of current production car technology. In order to accommodate the ‘09 Ultimate Aero’s unique fuel system requirements, SSC turned to American company Aeromotive to develop a flawless system. The aggressive nose is redesigned with enhanced aerodynamics to accommodate the 2009 Ultimate Aero’s higher top speed, and carbon fiber louvers on the side intakes draw in an additional 20% of air into the radiators for improved cooling. The improvement in overall performance will widen the already sizeable gap between the Ultimate Aero and its competitors. The ‘09 Ultimate Aero also introduces the AeroBrakeTM a rear spoiler system that deploys under braking situations. Finished in carbon fiber, the rear spoilers actuate up an additional 8″ when the brake pedal is depressed. The speed of the spoiler actuation is set by the amount of brake pedal pressure. The complete AeroBrakeTM system can be disabled by the push of a button, for town driving or situations where braking and downforce assistance are not necessary.


Rounding out the ‘09 Ultimate Aero’s improvements is a revamped interior. A redesigned dash prominently displays sleek, exposed carbon fiber dash halves and inset air vents. Carbon fiber accents run along the doorsills, surround the new gauge cluster, and continue onto a revised steering column, which includes an analog speedometer and tachometer with a sequential shift light integrated into the tachometer needle. The new center console incorporates a digital temperature control unit and tire pressure monitor along with an Azentek PC base Infotainment unit. The revolutionary Azentek unit offers all the capabilities of a PC and processes SSC’s onboard diagnostic software.

The new center console incorporates a digital temperature control unit and tire pressure monitor along with an Azentek PC base Infotainment unit. The revolutionary Azentek unit offers all the capabilities of a PC and processes SSC’s onboard diagnostic software.

Mercedes-Benz Gullwing Mule Caught In The Cold Spy Shots

It looks like the Mercedes-Benz engineers are still moving forward with the SLC Gullwing project, as our spy shooters recently caught the car testing in some bone-chilling weather. (-15 degrees Fahrenheit! Brr!)

According to the folks at CarPix, we can expect a twin-turbocharged V-8 under the hood producing roughly 600 horsepower. This engine will be mated to a seven-speed transmission and the car's body will be made of carbon fiber and aluminum to reduce overall weight. Look for a more production-ready version of this car to hit around 2010.

There is something about winter testing, it’s almost always dark, snowing or foggy. In this case dark and foggy, but we still want to show you these new photos of the Mercedes Gullwing while driving in the snow, at -26 degrees Celsius.
It’s not clear yet if it will wear the Mercedes symbol, the AMG badge or both but we can agree that it will have a tuff market when it’s time for presentation. Hopefully the financial crisis has calmed down until 2010 when the Gullwing will be official.

Farbio adds new GTS400 to lineup

British sports carmaker Farbio has introduced a new model to its GTS family, with the latest addition picking up a new 410hp (305kW) version of the company’s 3.0L supercharged V6 engine. Called the GTS400, the new model draws its extra oomph over the existing 260hp (194kW) GTS and 350hp (261kW) GTS300 thanks to the addition of an uprated induction and exhaust system and a remapped ECU.

The GTS400 also incorporates a flat floor running the full length of the car, joining the front splitter and rear diffuser, which already provide impressive downforce at both axles. The car also has added cooling ducts, to accommodate its twin intercoolers, as well as an upgraded clutch and traction control system.

The mid-mounted engine sends drive to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox, and according to its maker the GTS400 will accelerate from 0-60mph in about 3.7 seconds and reach a top speed in excess of 185mph.

Brakes are AP Racing with six-pot calipers and 350mm vented discs in the front and 328mm units up back. Suspension is fully adjustable dampers with Eibach coil-over springs and the standard carbon-fiber wheels measure in at 20in. Inside, there’s Sparco racing buckets and a touch-screen interface for the satnav, climate control and stereo system.

Farbio already has a long list of orders from customers in the U.K., U.S., Scandinavia and Thailand, and been building the cars since the middle of the year.

Man builds F-35 fighter jet, drives it on the roads


If you can’t ever get inside a real F-35, why not build yourself one? That is exactly what Arthur van Poppel did and created this done-it-himself F-35. Poppel’s jet is a scaled version of the original and integrates awesomeness with the attention to detail, down to the pilot ‘costume’. He added an extra seat to the fighter jet, and some special effects like spewing smoke, water and confetti. Incredible attention to detail, but what he forgot to make the jet capable of flying and also, the jet is incapable of firing missiles. Lockheed Martin’s F-35 does seem to have an edge on Poppel’s jet, but since Lockheed’s fighter jet can’t move around the road entertaining people, or throw confetti around, we give the prize to Poppel’s jet.

Brit steam powered racer aims to be the fastest



The Brits are at it again! Few days after we heard of the 1000mph plus Bloodhound, its now time to target the steam-powered vehicle record as well. The new steam racer is looking to shatter the century old record by 40mph, going to the top speed of 170 miles per hour. To reach this speed, the car will produce a surprisingly large amount of heat.

Built out of donated, salvaged or custom-fabricated parts, the core of the car is powered by 12 micro boilers, where temperature reaches to a high 2000 Fahrenheit, producing a momentous 3 megawatt of heat! With only 360 hp to command, this indeed is quite extravagant.
