The twin-turbocharged Ferrari California T is an extremely fast car, but as Ferraris go, it's rather geared toward, um, Rodeo Drive more than Road America, what with its retractable hardtop and conspicuously comfortable interior. It's a Ferrari that's designed to be worn as much as driven, and as such is the only one that looks acceptable in beige—which everyone knows goes with everything.
-Here—or at the Shanghai auto show, more accurately—proving the latter point is a one-off California T that shows what Ferrari can do through its Tailor Made program. And the color is no ordinary beige, but is in fact the same silvery "Grigio Ingrid" color that adorned the famous Ferrari 375 MM coupe that Roberto Rossellini gifted to Ingrid Bergman in 1954. A thin gray stripe runs down the center of the car from the Prancing Horse badge rearward. Dressy.

Inside, the show car's pillowy, leather-covered seats with tiny "X" stitches pay homage to the "Kennedy Chair" designed for Jacqueline Kennedy by Jean Marie Massaud in 1961. They're complimented by intricate, waxed-edge stitching on the door panels and dashboard, where more of the seat's rich brown leather can be found. Above the occupants is a black faux-suede headliner—or pure sunshine, if the top is lowered. As for the carpets, they're 100-percent pure virgin wool from New Zealand, thanks for asking.

Were we turned loose with Ferrari's arsenal of talented paint, trim, and sheetmetal artisans, we're not sure we would choose beige and tan—however historic—to illustrate the breadth of our creativity. (We might do something closer to the Sergio, another Tailor Made creation.) Then again, we're responsible for some pretty hideous One-of-One Vipers, so our taste is already suspect. In any case, given the bespoke nature of this California T, don't be surprised to see this car shown again, perhaps alongside the famous Bergman Ferrari, at a concours event in the future.
