Bedtime for Box-o: Chevy Offering Bed-Delete Option on Colorado

People who love to work require vehicles suited to their trades. We suppose those who abhor work but trudge through it everyday anyway require the same thing. In a bid to make Colorado fleet models the ones for fleets to have, Chevy has decided to offer its mid-size pickup with a box-delete option, allowing customers and/or their upfitters to install whatever the heck they desire behind the cab.

RPO code ZW9, which likely will never be quite as legendary as ZL1 or Z71, does not offer an aluminum 427 or lifty suspenders 'n' skidplates. But it does offer a 2200-pound payload rating, a 6001-pound GVWR, rear-bumper delete, a full-size spare, four body-mount provisions per frame rail, and an optional fuel filler for different rear configurations. GM also throws in a tow package and a locking differential. But the most important thing is that Chevy delivers the thing sans pickup bed.

Available only on V-6–powered 2WD Work Truck extended-cab models (which also offer a rear-seat delete option for extra jumble space behind the driver), going ZW9 saves 300 bucks over a bed-havin' model. Which begs the question, is the going rate for a Colorado box a mere 300 bucks? If so, we might pick a couple up and turn 'em into sleds, trailers, or duck blinds. More important: 305 horsepower, RWD, no weight on the rear axle, and a locking diff? Burnouts for days, brah. Burnouts for days.
