2013 Audi S7 Quattro Long-Term Logbook: One Slick Driver Information Display

2013 Audi S7 Quattro Long-Term Logbook: One Slick Driver Information Display

"The driver-information center between the speedometer and the tachometer is one of the best on the market." – Csaba Csere

Audi's MMI infotainment system is quite a nice piece, but the setup's best aspect is perhaps how much info it can deliver without overloading the driver. A host of relevant information can be displayed in the screen situated in the center of the gauge cluster, just ahead of the driver.

While not as in the line of sight as, say, a head-up display, the screen is fairly large and very easy to control. Trip info, audio, phone, and navigation tabs are continually displayed along the top of the screen; you cycle through them using a left/right toggle on the left steering-wheel spoke. When a given tab is selected, alternate views—switching from turn-by-turn directions to a map, for example—can be accessed by tapping the menu button just below the left/right switch. You then use a dead-nuts simple thumb wheel to scroll through a list of options.

Besides impressing with its ease of use, the display also allows the driver to control most infotainment-related tasks, such as changing audio stations and sources or choosing and calling a phone contact. The screen itself is high resolution and easy to read, and paired with the steering-wheel controls, allows you the option of retracting the central dashboard screen into the dash and out of sight. One benefit of this is a streamlined dash, which, OK, looks nice but also—and more critical—less light in the cabin at night and one fewer distraction to look at.
