This weekend marked the beginning of competition in the 2014 Winter Olympic games in Sochi, Russia, and opening weekend for such a massively televised (and massively discussed) event can mean only one thing: A lot of eyeballs for advertisers like BMW, who put out this awesome Olympics-related spot for its all-new 2-series coupe. Having already driven the hotter 2-series, the M235i coupe, we can attest to that car's ability to snare our attention, but BMW upped the ante in its Olympics spot by adding a classic 2002. A freakin' Inka Orange 2002.
Dubbed "Torch," BMW's ad is embedded below for your pleasure. It opens with the 2002 driving straight at a new M235i, which promptly begins reversing in the same direction. Some dramatic jockeying between the two cars is followed by a friendly headlight flash from the 2002, at which point the M235i whips a J-turn and leaves its forebear behind, maybe to go hang out at a BMWCCA meeting or something.

BMW's intent, of course, is to show the 2002 metaphorically passing the "torch"—Olympic tie-in!—for simple, sporty BMW-ness to the 2-series. And seeing the little BMW on which BMW built its current reputation in a primetime ad was great—although maybe not for those of us looking for values of the vintage model to stabilize. Pretty soon, a really nice '02 may end up costing more than its modern analog, the $44,000 M235i.
